The BBC presents its six hopefuls for Kyiv

Today the six acts hoping to represent the United Kingdom in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest were presented in The Ken Bruce Show on BBC Radio 2

We’ll introduce them to you one by one:

01. Nate Simpson – What Are We Made Of

Nate took part in the most recent series of X-Factor and made it to the judges’ houses round, before Nicole Scherzinger sent him home just before the live shows. 23 year-old Nate works as a music teacher for a charity in Berkshire, England – and has been working on his own music and performing in Jazz gigs and festivals in the UK.

02. Salena Mastroianni – I Don’t Wanna Fight

Salena tried out for the X-Factor in 2012 but didn’t get past the first round of auditions. She’s been working on music ever since and cites her musical influences ranging from Beyonce to Massive Attack.

03. Danyl Johnson – Light Up The World

Danyl Johnson is one of the more well-known of this years’ X-Factor contestants hopefuls. Johnson competed in the X-Factor in the same year as Lucie Jones and Jedward, who of course represented their homeland Ireland back to back in 2011 and 2012. Johnson is 34 years old and has been working on music since he came fourth in the UK X-Factor in 2009, although has yet to reach the level of success of Olly Murs – who was also one of the 2009 X-Factor classmates. Could 2017 be Danyl’s year?

04. Lucie Jones – Never Give Up On You

25 year-old Lucie Jones is Welsh and aiming to follow in the footsteps of James Fox (2004) and lovely Emma (1990) in being the next Welsh act to represent the UK at Eurovision. Lucie was eliminated in week 5 of the 2009 X-Factor, as she lost out in the public vote to Jedward. Since then Lucie has had some success. She performed as Cosette in “Les Miserables” in London’s West End and has acted in tv shows such as Midsomer Murders. Lucie is hoping that her ballad gets her the ticket to Kyiv.

05. Holly Brewer – I Wish I Loved You More

28-year old Holly’s main claim to fame so far is auditioning in the 2015 series of the X-Factor and being the wedding singer for UK reality TV “star” Mark Wright and actress Michelle Keegan. She’s hoping to surpass both those achievements by winning You Decide 2017 and flying the flag for the UK in Kyiv. Holly has performed as the support act for Jess Glynne and McFly. Will she get the chance to shine in her own right in May?

Written by Kevin Fisher, Courtney Harrell, Laurell Barker, Mattias Frändå, Johan Åsgärde and Oliver Lundström.

06. Olivia Garcia – Freedom Hearts

Olivia is from the north west of England and another classmate of X-Factor 2016. She’s just 16 years old but only just missed out in the live shows of last year’s competition, as Simon Cowell sent her home at the judges’ houses round. Olivia has performed in venues including Wembley Arena, but will she be able to use this experience performing live on the Eurovision stage?

Written by Gabriel Alares, Sebastian Lestapier, Linnea Nelson and Laurell Barker.
